Woman Stabbed in Birmingham Bus Stop Assault Dies
A woman stabbed repeatedly in the neck in an unprovoked attack near a bus shelter in Birmingham has passed away, authorities verified.
The deceased woman, aged 34 years, was targeted on Smallbrook Queensway street, right beside Bullring shopping complex, just prior to 9 PM GMT Friday evening, according to police statements.
Djeison Rafael, 21, appeared before Birmingham court on Monday, facing charges for the violent incident.
Originally charged of attempted murder but following the woman's death the charge has been updated to murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
The force said police personnel will remain around the city centre on Monday to offer reassurance, while detectives assisted the woman's family.
Investigators are requesting any eyewitnesses who might have observed the accused, identified as British citizen of Black ethnicity, reportedly dressed in an all-grey tracksuit, dark headwear, athletic shoes with a backpack.
Incident Location
The stabbing happened near the Bullring shopping centre, across from primary access point to Birmingham New Street station.
Police said they were treating it as "unprovoked attack" and Det Insp James Nix said efforts continue to determine why it happened.
Witness Accounts
An area worker, employed in the vicinity, recounted the emergency response after completing her work period at about 22:00 on Friday.
She described the scene as "quite chaotic", and said some of her colleagues heard loud disturbances at about 21:00.
"Many my colleagues use transit services, ride the tramline... our safety is at risk essentially, in the downtown area."
Ashley Birks, twenty-five, resident of Stoke, said he came to Birmingham fairly regularly visiting his partner who lives in the city, and was concerned regarding the incident.
"It causes concern for my girlfriend," he said.
"She doesn't drive and works at all of the big music venues... and to think something completely unprovoked [happened], you know, it's horrible."
