The Year 2026 Dubbed the Year of the Frog Game.

While I found the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Considering a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Croaking characters are not at all new to the interactive entertainment. Ever since the era of Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. However, their popularity has markedly surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are serious amphibian adventures.

A Data-Driven Dive

To understand this rise, I undertook a deep dive into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is also visible elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the trend in gaming looks uniquely powerful.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Honestly, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have natural appealing traits for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and grappling abilities lend themselves to a host of creative gameplay ideas.

A number of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year so far.

When these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be entering a full-blown frog gaming renaissance.
