Delhi Rises to Hazardous Smog Following Festival of Lights

On Tuesday morning inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with breathing severely hazardous air that registered in the "severe" range.

Record-Breaking Pollution Levels

Multiple areas of the capital registered an AQI over 500, which equals 10x the safe limit recommended by the global health authority.

Particular areas, concentrations of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1800, amounting to 15 to 20 times above healthy standards.

Firecracker Restrictions and New Changes

Since 2020, officials had enforced a complete ban on the sale and use of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the deadly haze that blankets the capital as winter sets in.

Nevertheless in recent months, the current regional government appealed to the highest court to seek a relaxation of the prohibition.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically questioned by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a compromise between "tradition and environment".

Court Decision and Implementation

Despite concerns of environmental and health campaigners, judicial authorities complied with the request, mandating that green firecrackers could be set off during limited time windows throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was widespread violation of the time restrictions across the city, with little enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Several recording stations throughout the capital showed pollution reaching highest levels around late evening to some of the worst levels recorded during the festival in at least the past three years.

Regional Implications

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also sparked a blame game with bordering Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab province pointing to deteriorating atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on contaminants traveling from neighboring India following the events.

Persistent Environmental Problem

Alarmingly severe readings of atmospheric toxins in the city have continued as a major problem for more than 15 years, with the condition showing no improvement.

Around the festival period, the concentration of hazardous particles in the atmosphere has been documented to shoot up to seventy percent above the worst levels ever documented in Beijing, which was once considered as the world's most polluted city.

Various Contamination Sources

The problem in Delhi is resulting from a combination of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, building projects, waste incineration and pollutants from crop residue ignition in adjacent regions of farming communities.

In these regions, rural residents regularly set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, generating hazardous smog that then gets trapped over the capital as cooler air arrives.

Medical and Financial Impact

The economic and health consequences on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants residing in the capital region is substantial, according to numerous studies.

The contaminated air leads to elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can even lead to oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be causing 10,000 untimely deaths each year in the city.
