“It is plainly a dreadful, dreadful disaster and undoubtedly all Australians offer their thoughts to the people of Switzerland, the victims and families,” the minister said during ABC RN radio.

He added, “I can confirm that one Australian has been injured and is getting medical attention and the relatives are getting help, support from Australian diplomats. Further details cannot be shared for privacy reasons. The name of the individual is not being released at this point.”

Department Assistance and Ongoing Inquiries

The Australian DFAT stated this morning it was offering diplomatic support to the injured person and their family.

A foreign affairs official said: “Consular aid is being given by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to the relatives of an Australian national that has been hurt and is undergoing treatment following the fire. Due to our confidentiality duties we are prevented from commenting further.”

The representative further stated, “Dfat is making urgent inquiries with authorities on the ground to determine whether any additional Australians were affected. We are prepared to offer diplomatic support.”

Scope of Consular Assistance

Consular assistance can include:

  • Reaching out to or attending medical facilities.
  • Working with officials on site.

  • Support for reaching out to next of kin.

Circumstances Surrounding the Tragic Fire

Local police reported the blaze began around 1:30 a.m., local time, in a bar popular with tourists called Le Constellation bar, which is situated in the heart of the Valais resort.

Video of the incident shows orange flames billowing from inside the first-floor establishment. Screams and loud music can be heard, and a number of individuals were observed fallen outside the building.

A number of those who perished in the inferno remain unidentified yet due to the severity of their burns.

Investigation into the Blaze's Cause

Swiss police said it was not a case of arson for the blaze, which is thought to be the result of an accident.

Advice for Concerned Australians

Australians concerned about family members who may have been caught up in the fire were advised to call the Australian diplomatic emergency hotline on 1300-555-135.
